“Our Food Should Be Our Medicine & Our Medicine Should Be Our Food”

Hippocrates, the founder of medicine, is credited with saying, "Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food." Even though it is thousands of years old, this quote recognises the value of a healthy diet and the healing powers of various food nutrients. For maintaining good health and preventing disease, it's essential to lead a healthy lifestyle and eat well.

A healthy diet consists of consuming enough of the right foods and liquids to give your body the nutrients it needs to function as intended and to maintain health. Some diets increase the risk of obesity, diabetes, and cancer while creating diseases like hypertension, high cholesterol, and other heart conditions. The risk of these diseases is decreased by other diets.

Vegetables, whole grains, beans and other legumes, fruits, nuts, and seeds make up the bulk of a diet that is primarily plant-based. If preferred, fish, chicken, and minimal low-fat dairy products could make up 20% of the diet. The body receives therapeutic vitamins, minerals, proteins, good fats, and fibre from these nutrient-dense foods.

For optimal health, a plant-based diet and adequate hydration are essential. It's best to consume eight 8-ounce glasses daily. As a general rule, consume half your body weight in ounces each day. Juices, pop, milk, coffee, and tea do not count. Drinking pure, clean water is the best way to hydrate and keep your body flushed of toxins.

Our environment's chemicals may be bad for our nutritional health. When possible, choose produce from nearby farms and purchase organic food. To get rid of pesticides and potential toxins, wash all produce before eating.

“Let food be thy medicine…” is a great approach to take when looking at lifestyle changes needed to prevent and reduce disease. This does not suggest that conventional medicines are not necessary, but rather shows the significant role that a healthy diet plays in disease prevention. Take full advantage of what a healthy diet can do for you!
